Decisons made in our nation's capital affect people around the world. But far too often, those decisions leave local residents all but forgotten. Maybe this will renew people's faith and persuade them to change their voter registration. Since so many DC residents are transplants, they maintain their voter registration in their home state. When pressed why they don't change, they've replied "Because I want my vote to count for something!" It is a short-sighted answer considering their ANC, Board of Education, City Council, and Mayor have a more immediate impact on their lives. They believe that their federal "voice" is paramount; when in one point-of-view, it becomes diminished as it is aggregated with the tens of thousands of other individuals in their home district.
It's true, when I moved to DC, I maintained my NY voter registration. Now, as a full-fledged DC voter, I get MORE access to my government considering our ANCs.
When Del. Norton becomes Rep. Norton, let's ensure the Board of Elections and Ethics is ready to register the thousands of transplants who may just make DC their home!
